Meta shows fewer purchases than Shopify: read the gap before you cut ads

Updated · TagGap

Quick answer: First make sure you are comparing like with like: Ads Manager only counts purchases attributed to your ads, while Events Manager shows every purchase event Meta received. Compare Shopify with Events Manager. If that gap is large or suddenly grows, check Conversions API coverage, deduplication and the purchase pixel.

Ads Manager, Events Manager and Shopify count different things

  • Shopify counts every order.
  • Meta Events Manager counts every Purchase event your Pixel and Conversions API delivered, whether or not an ad was involved.
  • Ads Manager counts only purchases Meta attributes to an ad within your attribution setting.

So Ads Manager will almost always show fewer purchases than Shopify, and that alone does not mean tracking is broken. The useful comparison for tracking health is Shopify orders against Events Manager purchases for the same days.

Signs the gap is a tracking problem

  • Events Manager purchases dropped on a specific day while Shopify orders did not.
  • Only browser (Pixel) purchases arrive and server events are missing, or the other way round.
  • Events Manager reports purchases that were not deduplicated, so some days show more purchases than orders.
  • Event match quality for Purchase is low, so Meta cannot connect purchases to people who saw your ads.

Check it step by step

  1. In Events Manager, open your dataset, select the Purchase event and look at the last 28 days by day. Note browser and server counts separately.
  2. Put Shopify orders per day next to it, excluding POS, draft and subscription renewal orders that never reach a browser.
  3. If server events are missing, check that your Conversions API integration is connected and sending Purchase. If browser events are missing, check Settings → Customer events in Shopify.
  4. If totals are higher than orders, check deduplication: both events must share the same event_id. See Meta Pixel and CAPI deduplication.
  5. Only after tracking is healthy, compare Ads Manager results and change budgets.

Why you cannot get an exact list from Meta

Meta exposes daily purchase totals to apps, not a list of the orders it received. TagGap compares those totals with Shopify day by day, then lists the orders that carried a Meta click or browser id on gap days as likely unreported. They are labeled probable, because that is as precise as Meta’s data allows.
